About Five Letter Solver

Five Letter Solver is a lookup tool for five-letter words. Give it the constraints you know — a letter fixed in the third position, a letter that appears somewhere, a set of letters ruled out — and it returns every five-letter word that satisfies them.

Where a guessing game asks you to produce candidates from memory, this works the other way round: it starts from the complete set of five-letter words and removes everything your clues have eliminated. What is left is the honest answer to what you actually know.

Why five letters specifically

Five is the length that daily word puzzles settled on, and it is not an accident. Four-letter words are too easy to brute-force; six-letter words leave too many possibilities alive after three guesses. Five sits at the point where a puzzle is solvable in six tries but rarely in two.

That also makes five-letter words worth studying as a set, which is what the pages on this site are for. Knowing which five-letter words avoid repeated letters, or which carry two vowels, is directly useful in a way that trivia about the language usually is not.

How it works

Everything runs in your browser. The page loads a list of 10,363 five-letter words and filters it against your constraints. Nothing you enter leaves your device, because there is no server doing the work.

The first search after loading the page takes a moment while the word list downloads. Everything after that is immediate.

The word list

The list comes from a standard English word list, restricted to exactly five letters. It includes uncommon and archaic words alongside everyday vocabulary, because a filter that only knows common words cannot tell you whether an unusual guess is legal.

Individual games maintain their own dictionaries and will not accept everything here. That mismatch is expected rather than an error on either side.
