497 five-letter words start with A. That makes it the most productive vowel opener by a wide margin, and still only about six percent of the list.
English strongly prefers a consonant in position one. That preference is worth internalising: when a word begins with a vowel, the structure of the rest of the word shifts in ways that make it easier to pin down.
What follows an opening A
A leading A is usually followed by a consonant, and a narrow set at that. B, C, D, G, L, M, N, R, S and T account for the overwhelming majority. A second vowel in position two is comparatively rare and worth testing early precisely because it eliminates so much.
This is the opposite of the situation mid-word, where vowel pairs are common. At the front of a word they are the exception.
The prefix effect
A large share of this list comes from words built on a schwa-sounding A prefix — ABOUT, ALONE, AWAKE, ALOFT. That construction reliably places a consonant at position two and a vowel at position three or four.
Knowing that pattern lets you skip a guess. If you have a green A in position one and are choosing where to test a second vowel, position three is the better bet than position two.
Where players lose time
The common mistake is treating a confirmed opening A as strong information. It is not, on its own — nearly five hundred words survive it. It becomes powerful only when paired with a second constraint, at which point the field usually drops to single digits.
If your only clue is a green A at the front, spend the next guess on information rather than trying to solve.
